Camden has been announced by software and analytics company, SAS, as the UK capital’s most prepared borough for artificial intelligence (AI).
The north London council area, home to Google, Facebook and leading universities, scored highest in the London analysis of the SAS AI Cities Index 2024, which looks at the cities and London boroughs that are most likely to benefit from the growing appetite for AI.
Westminster came in second and Southwark third, both having some of the most AI-related jobs available in an eight-kilometre radius. Lambeth, in sixth place, came top in regard to the highest number of jobs currently advertised within AI.
“Borough councils play a significant role in fostering local talent and driving innovation,” Glyn Townsend, Senior Director, Education Services at SAS EMEA, told Cities Today. “In Camden, job availability and investment in the area are key factors in promoting both. By facilitating partnerships between educational institutions, businesses, and local communities, councils ensure young people are equipped with the skills needed for future careers, particularly in fast-evolving fields like AI.”
Due to the significant investment in the area and InnovateUK awarding £84 million to businesses registered there, Camden has had a unique opportunity to reinvest in the community. It offers the highest number of university courses among all boroughs, along with over 3,700 AI-focused jobs, helping to bridge the gap between industry andeducation.
“By connecting students with local businesses and start-ups, Camden’s local engagement has not only been able to help students understand the job market but also support the growth of local industries,” said Townsend.
Camden is an eclectic borough known for its cultural diversity, alternative fashion, and thriving music scene. Famous for Camden Market, it attracts visitors with its quirky shops, street food, and artsy vibe. Historically, Camden has been a hub for creativity, with many iconic musicians, artists, and writers having lived or worked there.
“As Camden has demonstrated, developing partnerships with tech companies and educational institutions can boost AI potential and help create targeted programmes and initiatives,” said Townsend. “It’s crucial for councils to collaborate with businesses to adopt a broader workforce ecosystem, moving away from traditional strategies toward a more dynamic and collaborative approach. This helps develop specialist talent that can drive AI innovation.”
